The SFA have confirmed the appointment of John Beaton for the weekend’s Scottish Cup. The whistler was on VAR as Celtic were beaten by Hearts at Tynecastle and made two dubious decisions that ultimately played a part in the Jambos taking three points.
Despite Brendan Rodgers’ scathing assessment of Beaton’s performance on VAR, the referee will take charge as Aberdeen host Derek McInnes’ Kilmarnock.
Celtic have appealed the first decision, to send Yang off, citing a wrongful dismissal. This is due to be heard by the SFA today after being fast tracked. It meant that Celtic had to play over eighty minutes with just ten men against Hearts.
The second decision, to award a penalty against Tomoki Iwata, has been panned by pundits. The ball fell and hit the Japanese midfielder while his back was turned and he knew nothing about it.
Celtic are still waiting to hear whether the manager will be reprimanded by the governing body for his comments about Beaton. The club have written to the SFA and have raised concerns about the standard of officiating at various points this year.
