Being one of the best and well-known clubs in Europe, FC Barcelona is naturally one of the most competitive teams in the world of football. Even some very good players are unable to hold their positions in the Blaugrana squad, and it takes a perfect balance of luck, hard work, and talent to succeed in the Catalan team.

This situation is quite clear from the way several high-profile names have been unable to keep their position in the Barcelona squad in the last few years.

One such player about whose talent there never was any doubt and who also quite impressed in his only season at the Blaugrana club, but was still unable to get continuity with the Catalan team due to financial and sporting reasons, was the fullback João Cancelo.

He played for Barcelona on loan in Xavi’s last season in charge, and despite it being a difficult season for his team, he still fell in love with the club and the city.

Now playing for Al-Hilal, he still considers himself to be a Barcelona fan, and as SPORT has reported, he did not make any efforts to hide it as he spoke to the media after his side’s game against Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup last night.

Talking about the Catalan club, the Portuguese fullback said: “I’m a Barça fan, it’s normal. I love Barça and I love Barcelona. I love the group I was with at Barça. Now I’m at Al-Hilal and I’m continuing on this path.”

Several former Barcelona stars are playing in the Club World Cup

This aspect of his personality would have made last night’s match even special for him. In fact, he was quite happy with the draw that his side got against the Merengues, who are currently being considered as one of the favorites to win this inaugural FIFA competition.

Barcelona themselves are not participating in this competition, but they will have several of their former players to cheer for, including Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, and João Cancelo himself.
