Javier Tebas warns Barcelona over Nico Williams case
While Nico Williams keeps loudly declaring his desire to join FC Barcelona, despite attractive offers from elsewhere, Javier Tebas has once again poured cold water on the hopes of the Catalan fans.
Speaking on the sidelines of the La Liga fixture draw, the president of the Spanish League was unequivocal:
Nico Williams? If he were to become a Barcelona player today, he simply could not be registered.
Javier Tebas, true to his direct style, reminded everyone that the Catalan club is still not eligible for the famous "1 for 1" rule, which allows a club to register a player for each departure of equal value:
Barcelona can't sign players freely. If they want to bring in Nico, Haaland, Messi or anyone else, they'll have to comply with the rules.
President Tebas also took the opportunity to highlight the transparency of the rules:
FC Barcelona knows perfectly well what it needs to do to return to the 1:1 regime. And so does Athletic Club, as we have been very clear about this since February.
Meanwhile, the Catalan press insists that the transfer of Nico Williams is imminent. The player is even said to have cut his holiday short to speed up the administrative process for his departure from Athletic Bilbao. His release clause is estimated at 62 million euros. The big question remains whether Barça will find the necessary financial levers to make this transfer happen.
