Former Blue Jason Cundy has admitted he’s glad the club didn’t sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in the summer.

The Blues pursued the Nigeria international for the majority of the window but were unable to agree a deal and he ended up joining Galatasaray on a season long loan.

Osimhen wasn’t the only striker Chelsea were linked to and they had a deal agreed with Samu Omorodion only for it to collapse at the last minute.

The only striker to arrive at the club was teenager Marc Guiu in an opportunistic move from Spanish giants Barcelona, with a lot made of Chelsea’s failure to bring in an established number nine.

However, goals haven’t been an issue for Enzo Maresca’s men so far and they are currently the third highest scorers in the league.

Jackson’s start to the season has shown missing out on a striker might not have been the worst thing and he’s come on leaps and bounds under Maresca already.

The 23-year-old has seven goals and three assists in 12 games, and Jamie O’Hara believes he’s turning into a really good striker.

The Blues really believe in Jackson and a report in The Athletic last week stated the club believe he’s a top three striker in the league.

Cundy has revealed he’s glad Osimhen didn’t arrive in the summer, but still believes the Blues need a back-up for Jackson.

“I’m glad we didn’t get Osimhen in the summer, because if we did, we wouldn’t be seeing the numbers of Jackson is putting up,” he told talkSPORT.

“But there is a case to be said. Do we need a backup? And Nkunku right now isn’t that backup? And that’s the problem we have as a squad.

“We don’t really have a genuine backup for Jackson, but because he’s so young. How do you back up someone so young. So therefore, if you bring someone in, you got to bring someone who’s going to go over Jackson. Who is that player?”

Jackson hasn’t travelled with the squad for Thursday’s Conference League game against Heidenheim, but will return to the line-up for Sunday’s huge game against Aston Villa.
