Jason Cundy has backed Nicolas Jackson and believes he’s better than one £85m forward in the Premier League despite his recent struggles.

The Blues once again dropped points on Tuesday night as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Bournemouth, with Reece James scoring a last minute free-kick.

It’s now no wins in the last five league matches and just three points from a possible 15, with Chelsea now fifth in the table after Newcastle beat Wolves on Wednesday evening.

Cundy believes Jackson is better than Nunez

The last five games have followed a familiar pattern with Chelsea creating numerous chances and being unable to convert them.

Having scored freely earlier in the season it’s now four goals in their last five games, with three coming from Cole Palmer and one from James.

Jackson has come in for criticism for missing chances in recent games, although against the Cherries he was instrumental in the build-up to Palmer’s goal.

The 23-year-old is struggling in front of goal and has just one goal in his last seven games, but Chelsea are said to highly appreciate the way he leads the press out of possession.

Cundy feels Jackson could become a good striker and shut down comparisons to Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez.

“Jackson may well turn out to be a very good striker and there are a lot of good things to like,” he told talkSPORT.

“The goal, the goal he sets up for Palmer, hold-up play, pass, brilliant. It’s his finishing, his day job. He’s got to take, he could have had minimum two goals today, should have had two goals today.”

Jermaine Pennant then tried to compare Jackson with Nunez, something Cundy complete disagreed with, and when Pennant stated there was a debate to be had Cundy responded:

“He’s better than Nunez. The numbers will tell you it’s not [a debate].”

Jackson has done well this season and deserves plaudits, but he’s got improve in front of goal because right now it’s hurting Chelsea that he’s not taking his chances despite how good his all round play has been.
