Bild reports that Mainz coach Jan Siewart is expected to be made the permanent coach of the club after lining out his plan to help the club escape relegation to the bosses.
Siewart was Mainz’s under-23s coach but was promoted to interim coach after Bo Svensson departed the club earlier in the season. Since the former Huddersfield manager took over, Mainz have only lost twice and have moved from dead last in the Bundesliga to 16th with their most recent result being a 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
In a meeting conducted this week, Siewart laid out his plan on how he plans to save Mainz from relegation and this pitch convinced the bosses at the club to make him the new head coach and extend his contract beyond this summer.
After a consistent run of seasons where they finished just outside of the European places, the wheels fell off for Mainz this season and they went winless in the league until early November when they beat RB Leipzig 2-0. Under Siewart there has been an improvement in their performances but they are still struggling.
