Jan Molby’s Funniest Jurgen Klopp Interview Moments

Jürgen Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool has been marked by tremendous success, but also by his larger-than-life personality and sense of humour. In a special episode of “Molby On The Spot,” Trev Downey and Liverpool legend Jan Molby shared some of the funniest and most memorable moments from Klopp’s interviews. These anecdotes provide a glimpse into Klopp’s unique character and the lighter side of his management style.

Klopp’s Playful Nature

One of the stories Molby shared highlighted Klopp’s playful and theatrical nature. Reflecting on an interview after a Champions League game against Manchester City in 2012, Molby said, “I remember interviewing Klopp after the game. Dortmund had been leading, and City equalized late on. Klopp walked in and, in his usual dramatic style, asked, ‘Who’s interviewing me?’ When I stepped forward, he stopped, looked at me, and said, ‘Maybe one day I’ll look back on this game and think it was the one that got away.’ It was pure theatre.”

Klopp’s Des Kelly Incident

Another classic Klopp moment involved Des Kelly from BT Sport. Molby recalled, “There was a 12:30 kickoff, and Klopp came out for the post-match interview. He mumbled something to Des Kelly, who thought Klopp had said, ‘You want some?’ Des came over to me, white as a sheet, saying, ‘I’m sure Klopp just challenged me!’ It turned out Klopp had actually said, ‘You won, son,’ referring to the early kickoff time. It was a great story until the evidence killed it.”

Klopp’s Art of the Semi-Argument

Molby emphasized that interviewing Klopp often felt more like a semi-argument than a traditional interview. He shared an example: “During lockdown, I interviewed Klopp after a win against Ajax. I mentioned that the performance wasn’t particularly good, expecting him to agree. Instead, Klopp shot back, ‘Were you disappointed?’ It was his way of turning the question back on me, making it clear that he wasn’t going to give in easily.”

Klopp and the Journalists

Klopp’s interactions with journalists are often memorable for their unpredictability. Molby noted, “Klopp can be intimidating for journalists, especially the younger ones. They sometimes don’t know what to ask, fearing they might provoke him. But Klopp is genuine. He doesn’t premeditate his responses; he’s open and wants to give you his best. However, he can quickly turn if he disagrees with you.”

Klopp’s Emotional Farewell

As Klopp’s time at Liverpool draws to a close, Molby reflected on the emotional aspect of his departure. “Klopp has been afforded something very few managers get: the chance to say farewell on his own terms. He understands drama, and he’s the perfect person to lead the fans through this emotional period.”

Jürgen Klopp’s interviews have provided countless memorable and humorous moments. Jan Molby’s anecdotes capture the essence of Klopp’s personality: theatrical, playful, and at times, confrontational. These stories highlight the unique charm that Klopp brought to Liverpool, endearing him to fans and journalists alike. As Klopp prepares to leave, these funny and poignant moments will remain a cherished part of his legacy.
