Liverpool’s shock exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Plymouth Argyle has sparked a flurry of opinions, with fans and pundits divided on the implications for the Reds’ season. A rotated squad fell short on the south coast, with players like Harvey Elliott drawing criticism and Federico Chiesa being labelled ‘not good enough’ by frustrated supporters.
Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge did not mince words, calling Arne Slot’s decision to rotate his squad a ‘mistake’ against the Championship side. However, not everyone shares this viewpoint. Speaking on The Overlap, Micah Richards backed Slot’s tactical choice, arguing that Liverpool have bigger priorities this season—a sentiment echoed by former Reds captain Jamie Carragher.

Carragher’s perspective has added an interesting layer to the debate. He believes that fewer fixtures could benefit Liverpool in their Premier League title charge. “I looked at when Arsenal went out to United (in the FA Cup) and I was thinking that could be a problem because I thought we would go far in it. I actually think it was a great day all around. A great day for FA Cup, a giant-killing, great for Plymouth and I think it’s really good, decent for Liverpool,” Carragher noted.
Highlighting the potential silver lining, he added, “The way I looked at it, does that give Liverpool more chance of winning the league and I think in terms of percentages it probably does.” For Carragher, the FA Cup exit isn’t a setback but an opportunity to focus energy and resources on securing domestic glory.
While Carragher sees the positives, Paul Scholes introduced a contrasting viewpoint. Speaking on The Overlap, Scholes warned that the loss could disrupt Liverpool’s momentum during a crucial part of the season.
“I agree with what you say Jamie about how probably it is a good thing but then you have to think about momentum. You lose and all of a sudden, there’s a little bit more pressure on you Wednesday and if you drop points on Wednesday that makes you think oh s—. It does put a little bit of pressure but like I say I think you’re probably better out of it,” Scholes commented.
With four key games packed into just 15 days, Arne Slot will need to carefully manage his squad’s confidence and form. The FA Cup exit may have lightened the fixture load, but the psychological effects of a loss could linger if not addressed promptly.
Arne Slot’s tenure at Liverpool has been marked by strategic decisions, and this FA Cup exit will be a defining moment in his managerial journey. While some fans and pundits, like Aldridge, view the rotation as a misstep, others appreciate the long-term vision.
Slot now faces the task of maintaining momentum while capitalising on the reduced fixture congestion. If Liverpool can navigate this period successfully, the FA Cup exit may be remembered not as a failure, but as a turning point in a title-winning campai
The FA Cup exit against Plymouth is undoubtedly disappointing—no supporter wants to see their team bow out to lower-league opposition. However, there’s a sense of pragmatism among the Anfield faithful. With the Premier League title and European ambitions still in play, focusing on these bigger prizes might be the smarter route.
Arne Slot’s decision to rotate the squad reflects a manager who understands the marathon nature of a season. While it stings now, fans recognise that keeping key players fit for the league could be crucial. As Carragher pointed out, “this might actually boost our title chances.”
Still, there’s an awareness of Scholes’ momentum argument. Liverpool must bounce back immediately in their next fixture to prevent any psychological slump. If Slot can harness the squad’s frustration and turn it into fuel for the title run, this FA Cup exit will be seen as a mere bump on the road to glory.
