Fabrizio Romano has reported that Ben Chilwell could leave Chelsea this summer if the club sign a left footed defender.

Chilwell arrived at Chelsea from Leicester for £50m in 2020 and has played a key role in the club’s recent success, including winning the Champions League in 2021.

However, despite the success the England international’s time in west London has been plagued by injury issues, which have led to questions about his future.

Chilwell could leave Chelsea

Chilwell was named vice captain at the start of last season by Mauricio Pochettino, but was limited to 21 appearances in all competitions with just 13 of those coming in the Premier League as he suffered with hamstring and knee issues.

The 27-year-old is one of the most experienced players in the squad and is one of the few who know what it’s like to win trophies with the club.

However, with his injury issues and struggles to get back to his best form, rumours about his future have started to emerge, and it’s believed there is interest in Chilwell from Premier League clubs.

Chilwell could leave Chelsea this summer after four years at the club.

Chilwell could be one of the big losers from Enzo Maresca coming in given the Italian likes fullbacks who can invert into midfield and defenders who can also play in a back three.

It appears that Chilwell’s skillset doesn’t suit the way Maresca is wanting to play, but admittedly if given he opportunity there’s a chance he could adapt to the Italian’s system.

Romano has provided an update on Chilwell and said there’s a chance he could leave if the Blues sign a left footed defender.

“On Ben Chilwell, at the moment, nothing is imminent. But it’s possible for him to leave, especially if a left-footed defender is signed.”

The Blues are known to be in the market for a left footed defender and have shown interest in Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori, although they are believed to be behind Arsenal in the race for the Italy international.

Chelsea also like Nottingham Forest’s Murillo but have been off by the £70m valuation, and in any case the club would need to sell to make room for any new defenders in the squad, with Chilwell and Chalobah seemingly the most likely candidates.
