Two of Portugal’s best overseas managers met this weekend in their homeland, as Marco Silva’s Fulham overcame Nuno Espírito Santo’s Nottingham Forest 3-1 in Faro.
Speaking after the match, Cottagers boss Silva gave interviews to local journalists about Portuguese football, during which he expressed his happiness that the major clubs in the Primeira Liga are becoming more forceful in the transfer market.
"Each club, at this moment, clearly wants to prepare as best it can,” Silva said. “It's good to see that Portuguese clubs are developing a different financial capacity than they perhaps did five or ten years ago.
“Each of the three, plus Sporting Braga, are strengthening in whatever way they believe is best for their squads.”
Silva’s quotes come as Benfica recently broke their transfer record to acquire Colombian star Richard Rios from Palmeiras (€27m), taking their summer spending to €59m, while FC Porto have been busy, recruiting the likes of Danish international Victor Froholdt (€20m), Borja Sainz (€15m) and Alberto Costa (€15m) as president André Villas-Boas promised a strong summer. Meanwhile, Sporting are expected to announce the signing of Colombian striker Luis Suárez in a €25m deal.
