David Ornstein’s piece for NBC Sport yesterday was full of juicy content for Chelsea fans, from updates on Virgil van Dijk and Enzo Maresca’s future to chatter about the Blues’ striker options.
In summary of the whole situation, Ornstein made it sound like it could be another very busy summer for us. He mentioned potential transfer action in goal, on the wing, in defence and up front. It seems likely that central midfield is the one area we don’t see further movement – and as Ornstein points out, that’s only because we’ve got two new arrivals to the squad incoming:
“Let’s see what happens in this summer market,” the insider said.
“Their top priority is a striker and they’re looking at names like Liam Delap, Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike, then the wing position too, with Nico Williams of Athletic Club, Jamie Gittens at Borussia Dortmund and Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United among a number of options.
“In midfield they have Andrey Santos coming in from his loan at Strasbourg, he’s expected to be part of the first team setup. Dario Essugo has signed on a pre-contract from Sporting and he’ll be part of the squad too. They’ve got to look at their defence. There’s a number of options like [Dean] Huijsen, [Jeison] Murillo, [Jorrell] Hato, Marc Guehi… but I think that will be dependent on exits.
“And the goalkeeping situation – are Sanchez or a Jorgensen going to take that number one jersey? Or is Petrovic going to come back? Mike Penders has been signed as well. It’s up for grabs. Or will they recruit? We’ll have to wait and see.”

As news of our plans develops, it becomes more and more clear that a first team player in defence, a left winger and a striker who can compete with Nicolas Jackson are the three priority moves.
However, we would expect a lot more action than that, all dependent on which players are sold.
