The PFA have commented on the ongoing saga involving Sheffield Wednesday and Dejphon Chansiri

Sheffield Wednesday continue to dominate the Championship headlines this summer for all the wrong reasons.

June 30 marked the second time in three months that playing staff weren’t paid on time at Hillsborough, which means that some of the Owls’ current squad will be able to hand their notices in and exit the club for free.

Wednesday have already been hit with a three-window transfer ban and two embargoes by the EFL for non-payment of players and failure to pay HMRC on time.

This could lead to further punishment, which could come in the form of a longer embargo, fines and/or points deductions.

Club chairman Dejphon Chansiri needs to find £5 million to keep the Owls operating and stop this mess spiralling into something even more severe.

The head of the Professional Footballers' Association, Maheta Molango, has now provided a damning verdict on the situation as the Owls continue to languish in their fiscal doom.

"The standard contract foresees certain kinds of situations where you can terminate your contract and this is where there is a serious and/or persistent breach. So that's what we'll be looking at," Molango said.

"We've been in touch with the players. Our role is not to tell them what they need to do, [it is] to give them the tools and say, 'this is what you could do if those criteria are met'.

"Then it is for them to assess what they want to do, because I wouldn't take it for granted that just because certain criteria are met, automatically someone just terminates their contract. There are other considerations.

"We are in touch with them, it's not an easy situation as you can imagine, because ultimately, you know, people need to be paid.

"Particularly for me it's a bit shocking because normally this is stuff you see in other countries I have played in, but not in England.

"So we really want to be strong on that, and this is something that we will not tolerate and we will be very much on top of it."

Sheffield Wednesday are running out of time to sort out their situation

The Owls’ precarious situation has now run on for multiple months and hasn’t looked like being resolved at any moment. In fact, it has only gotten worse.

Wednesday don’t have their facilities ready for pre-season training, whilst other clubs are well underway with their preparations for the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

With players including Josh Windass reportedly handing in their notice, it’s currently unknown how many players the Owls will actually have contracted to the club by the time the new season rolls around.

Danny Rohl’s ongoing situation is still unresolved, which means that the Steel City side will have to appoint a new manager when the German’s impending exit is confirmed.

Who exactly would be up to the task of joining Wednesday in their current state is up for debate, but the lure of not receiving payment won’t be too convincing.

With their transfer restrictions and embargoes in place, it seems unimaginable that the Owls will be able to attract any new talent to Hillsborough this summer.

Therefore, unless a new buyer can be found, the future looks very bleak for Sheffield Wednesday.

In their current state, anything other than relegation seems increasingly unlikely.

The new Championship campaign will soon be upon us and Wednesday’s state may make for uncomfortable viewing, not just for the Owls’ supporters, but for fans all over the division, watching a once great club decimated by their current owner.
