Liverpool’s start to the season under new boss Arne Slot has been nothing short of electrifying. With back-to-back wins, the Reds are looking to build on the foundation set by Jürgen Klopp. However, amidst this positive start, questions remain regarding one of their most high-profile signings, Darwin Nunez.
Slot’s system seems to be gelling with the players, but it’s clear that the Uruguayan striker has yet to hit his stride in front of goal. After the recent 2-0 win over Bologna, Nunez’s lack of goals has sparked discussions. But does this mean Liverpool have reason to worry? Let’s take a closer look at Nunez’s situation, Slot’s perspective, and how competition in the forward line is heating up at Anfield.

Darwin Nunez was handed a starting role against Bologna, stepping in for the injured Diogo Jota. Despite his energetic display, he failed to find the back of the net. His last goal, a stunning strike against Bournemouth, had fans hoping it would spark a consistent run of form. However, the Uruguayan was subbed off in the second half, replaced by Jota, who continues to impress with his sharp finishing and movement.
Nunez’s frustration was palpable as he struggled to find space and convert opportunities. Yet, one could argue that his overall contribution was far from poor. His work rate remains impressive, tirelessly pressing defenders and creating space for his teammates. But in football, particularly in Liverpool’s current system, goals matter, and Nunez knows that he’ll need to deliver sooner rather than later.
When asked about Nunez’s performances after the Bologna match, Arne Slot defended his striker. “I don’t think it’s really honest to say he only scored one [this season] for Liverpool because you also have to look at the playing time he got, and I think it was his first start of the season,” Slot explained during his post-match conference.

Slot’s comments suggest that he is looking beyond raw statistics. He emphasised that Liverpool didn’t create many clear chances for Nunez, with the final pass often missing. “In the first hour, we didn’t create a lot of chances for him as well because we missed out on the last pass on numerous occasions,” he added.
The Liverpool manager also pointed to the fact that Nunez has faced tough opposition and needs more time to adjust fully to the tactical demands of his system. “His home game against Bournemouth, great goal, and today he was also involved, and the team we faced was really hard and tough on him,” Slot said, suggesting that patience is needed with Nunez.
One of the most interesting dynamics unfolding at Liverpool is the increasing competition for starting places in the forward line. Diogo Jota, who has returned from a minor injury, continues to perform at a high level, often delivering the kind of finishing that Nunez is currently struggling to produce.
Add to that the recent arrival of Federico Chiesa, and the competition becomes even fiercer. Chiesa’s versatility and experience could push Nunez further down the pecking order if his form doesn’t improve soon. Arne Slot faces a balancing act, ensuring that all his forwards get the right opportunities to prove themselves while also maintaining the team’s momentum.
It’s important to remember that Nunez’s struggles aren’t necessarily down to a lack of ability. Slot’s system, which requires forwards to press intensely and contribute off the ball, might be asking Nunez to adapt his game in ways that don’t directly lead to goals. That said, in a team competing for Premier League and Champions League honours, goals are crucial. Nunez will need to prove he can consistently deliver, even with the likes of Jota and Chiesa breathing down his neck.
With Liverpool set to face Crystal Palace in their next Premier League outing, Nunez may get another chance to start. However, it’s equally likely that Slot will opt for the more in-form Jota or even test Chiesa in the front line. If Nunez does feature, all eyes will be on whether he can rediscover his goal-scoring touch and stake his claim as a regular starter.
The key for Nunez will be to stay patient and continue working on the tactical nuances required in Slot’s system. As Slot himself mentioned, “It’s a bit early, after three games, to say he only scored one.” The season is long, and the striker still has plenty of time to find his rhythm and become a crucial asset for Liverpool.
