Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella came on as a substitute in the second half of yesterday’s Serie A match against Udinese.

The Italian international came on to help the Nerazzurri see out the win.

It was a typically battling performance from the former Cagliari midfielder. But also perhaps lacking some of his usual technical polish, as Inter failed to control the match.

Perhaps Barella’s most significant contribution yesterday came late on in the match.

The 28-year-old made the decision to extremely blatantly bring down Udinese midfielder Martin Payero.

Payero was storming down the right flank with space ahead of him. It was a dangerous counterattack that certainly could have resulted in a second Udinese goal.

And with Inter Milan protecting a 2-1 advantage in the dying minutes of the match, few Nerazzurri fans will have been unhappy with Barella’s decision to drag back Payero.

And there were obviously no complaints when Barella went into the book for the cynical professional foul.

But there will be a consequence of the booking.

Heading into the match, Barella was one yellow card away from suspension.

Therefore, the 28-year-old will miss Inter Milan’s next match. That comes away to Parma next weekend.
