Only one Italy player in the Premier League ended up on the winning side over the weekend, as Emerson Palmieri and West Ham put the final nail in Erik ten Hag’s coffin at Manchester United, while Newcastle supporters have become frustrated about the use of Sandro Tonali.

Here is how the Italy internationals in the Premier League got on this weekend.

Emerson and West Ham trump Manchester United

Emerson started as usual at left-back when West Ham hosted Manchester United at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon. He played the full 90 minutes as Julen Lopetegui’s side grabbed a 2-1 victory, thanks to Cyrencsio Summerville’s second-half opener and Jarrod Bowen’s eventual winner from the penalty spot two minutes into injury time.

Emerson (via X): ‘Another great day at home! Massive 3 points against a tough opponent. Proud of the team and the support from the fans. Let’s keep pushing!’

The result ended Erik ten Hag’s spell in charge of Manchester United as the 20-time Premier League/First Division winners are currently in 14th place in the table after three wins, two draws and four losses from their opening nine league matches of the 2024-25 campaign.

Newcastle complaints about Tonali

Sandro Tonali started again for Newcastle as they went on to record a 2-1 loss away against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea. It was not the most eventful of performances from the Italy midfielder, although Newcastle fans have begun to question why he is always substituted off around the hour mark.

A few losses and injuries

The Italy duo at Tottenham, Guglielmo Vicario and Destiny Udogie, were part of Spurs’s unfortunate 1-0 loss away to Crystal Palace. Jean-Phillipe Mateta’s 21st minute opener went without a response, which has left Tottenham on eight with 13 points, five away from the Premier League’s Champions League positions.

Caleb Okoli was the only other Italy player to start in the Premier League this weekend. He and his Leicester City teammates were involved in an East Midlands derby against Nottingham Forest on Friday night, but fell to a 3-1 home loss.

All the other Italy players in the Premier League were not involved this weekend. Jorginho was an unused substitute during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool, while Riccardo Calafiori did not make the bench due to minor injury concerns.

Federico Chiesa, for the same reason as Calafiori, was also left out of Arne Slot’s matchday squad for the 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Arsenal.

Cesare Casadei continues to not be involved in the matchday squad under Maresca at Chelsea.
