Vincenzo Italiano explains what he wants to see from Bologna on their Champions League debut against Shakhtar Donetsk. ‘I am sure after that music, the players will shake off the emotion.’

It kicks off at the Stadio Dall’Ara at 17.45 UK time (16.45 GMT).

This is the first UEFA competition for the Rossoblu since losing the Intertoto Cup Final to Fulham in 2002, but Italiano is more accustomed to Europe after taking Fiorentina to two consecutive Conference League Finals in 2023 and 2024.

“We need to get the emotions, the tactics, get them all at 100 per cent to perform. A competition like this requires immense individual and collective focus,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

Many of the players in the current squad had never played in the Champions League before, so will they be feeling wobbly when the anthem is played?

“I am sure after hearing that music, the players will shake off the initial emotion and put in a great performance,” assured Italiano.

A new Bologna for Italiano

Bologna are still looking for their first win of the season, having managed only three draws and a defeat since losing coach Thiago Motta, Riccardo Calafiori and Joshua Zirkzee over the summer.

“We need to improve the way we perceive danger, preventing problems before they start and not causing further difficulties for the rest of the team. That is where we need to improve, the concentration and focus.

“We are playing against teams of a high level and need to be even more careful. Along with that, ferocity, heart and sacrifice, all elements I am sure will not be lacking,” concluded Italiano.

“I am convinced the eyes of my players will be concentrated, eager to make their fans happy, that is what I want to see.”
