All season long we have seen Manchester City battle age, injuries, fatigue and a hectic schedule. It has cost them dearly this season. Pep Guardiola’s squad has appeared to be on its last legs this season. City’s loss to Real Madrid on Wednesday night was the perfect encapsulation of this. Based on Pep Guardiola’s comments today, it does appear that a clearout may be coming to the Manchester City squad.
Speaking during his pre-game press conference ahead of his team’s clash with Liverpool on Sunday Pep Guardiola explained the situation surrounding his players. He explained that some of them are unable to keep up with the demands of the modern game. He explained: “We have to sit down with doctors, physios, players, their agents, to be clear that some of them cannot sustain every three days, every month or two months playing every two or three days. This is the reality.”
We are beginning to see Pep Guardiola acknowledge the limitations of his current squad. When Manchester City’s rut began Guardiola was quick to defend his players every chance he had. But lately, his tone has changed as the reality of the situation Manchester City are facing has sunk in. Guardiola appears to have come to terms with the fact that a host of his most trusted players just can’t sustain the level required for long enough anymore. That’s just the reality of the situation City find themselves in.
It does appear that a clearout is coming at Manchester City this summer. Who leaves the world champions remains to be seen. But based on Guardiola’s comments today the players that could depart isn’t hard to figure out. It may be sad summer of departures at Manchester City. But it is necessary for the club to build their next era of dominance.
