Life after Sunday for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United…

Our last game offers us a few alternatives as regards playing in Europe next season, or not.

If we are successful in our quest for Europe, either immediately on Sunday or if we have to wait for Man City, then all will be rosy in the garden.

If we fail to get into Europe, Man U and Chelsea finish above Newcastle United, then what happens next could be very interesting.

I don’t think there are many who before the home game with Brighton, would have said that Newcastle United would not qualify for Europe. Brighton were mid-table with a significant injury list; Man U were playing badly and Brentford wasn’t really considered, as surely we would have done enough to qualify by then.

The Senior Management Team at Newcastle United are likely to have been in exactly the same frame of mind.

So, if we don’t qualify, this could be the first time in his tenure that our SMT could assess that Eddie Howe will have failed to achieve a reasonable (but incredibly important) objective.

If Newcastle United don’t get into Europe, we won’t sack Eddie Howe.

He’s got substantial mitigating circumstances and a LOT of credit – BUT – I wouldn’t be surprised if Eddie Howe has an “uncomfortable discussion” before next season, along the lines of “this is your third full season; we’ve pumped in “x” amount on players coming in; you need to either win a domestic trophy and / or qualify for Europe this season.”

The Newcastle United owners are ambitious and so far have supported Eddie Howe. Just missing out on Europe would result in a bit of pressure for Eddie and Jason next season, our owners want progress…
