Yann Sommer is confident Inter Milan can make amends for a disappointing season after last night’s win over River Plate.

Speaking to InterTV via FCInterNews, the veteran goalkeeper outlined Inter’s lofty ambitions in the United States.

Inter netted two unanswered second-half goals in a 2-0 victory against Marcelo Gallardo’s side.

As a result, they’ve progressed into the FIFA Club World Cup knockouts as Group E winners.

Francesco Pio Esposito and Alessandro Bastoni were on the scoresheet as Inter maintained their unbeaten start under Cristian Chivu.

Meanwhile, Sommer registered his first clean sheet in the States.

Indeed, he conceded in Inter’s first two fixtures against CF Monterrey and Urawa Red Diamonds.

However, River Plate couldn’t find a way past the Swiss veteran at Lumen Field last night.

That was the step in the right direction as Inter prepare for an exciting knockout tie against Fluminense.

“Tough match? It’s true,” Sommer admitted. “We played a good game. It was difficult against a team that plays hard.

“They’re strong and aggressive in the duels, but we did really well.

“It’s nice to play matches like this also because we don’t often face teams like them.

“The first few days were a bit tough after a long season, but now we’re here to win. Advancing is important for us and for the club.

“We have to put in a strong performance in the round of 16 too,” he continued. “We’ll need a lot of energy.

“It’s a bit different here, the pitches are different.

“But now we’re here, and then the next game will be another one we’ll need to play with the same energy.”

Lifting the trophy in North America would be a perfect response to a calamitous end to the 2024/25 season.

In addition to a runner-up finish in Serie A, Inter slumped to a humiliating 5-0 defeat to PSG in the Champions League final.

However, Chivu’s charges can put all that behind them this summer.
