Inter Milan are still in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League round of sixteen.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews. They highlight how hectic the final sprint will be.
Prior to Tuesday’s match away to Bayer Leverkusen, Inter were in quite a commanding position in the Champions League table.
The Nerazzurri had yet to lose a match – or concede a goal, They were behind only Liverpool in the standings.
Therefore, the Nerazzurri had every reason to say that they were among the big favourites to qualify directly for the round of sixteen.
Tuesday’s match against Leverkusen, however, came as a big blow to Inter’s European momentum.
Had Inter held on for a 0-0 draw, it would have been quite a valuable result.
But the stoppage time goal from Leverkusen defender Noni Madueke made things quite a bit trickier.
As the Corriere della Sera note, Inter are now right in the thick of a group of teams separated by just a few points.
Apart from Liverpool, who’ve been in a class of their own in Europe, and Barcelona not far behind them, there are now seventeen teams on between ten and thirteen points.
Clearly, the competition will be very fierce.
But as the Corriere della Sera note, Inter’s upcoming fixtures should be possible to navigate.
Next up are Sparta Prague. The Czech side have had a fairly poor European campaign and Inter should be heavy favourites.
Then come Ligue 1 side Monaco.
Inter would hardly want to feel that a match against Monaco is must-win for them. But they will back themselves to get any result they need.
