Cristian Chivu could not have imagined a better way to kick off his Serie A career as Inter Milan boss than last night’s win against Torino.

Speaking to the press after the game, the 44-year-old hailed the team’s performance at San Siro via FCInterNews.

Everyone was excited to see how the Nerazzurri would fare under Cristian Chivu once the league got underway.

However, only a few would expect Inter to be as dominant as they were against Marco Baroni’s side.

Indeed, last season’s Serie A runners-up put on a show, demolishing the Turin outfit 5-0 on home turf.

For Chivu, it was a perfect way to start the new campaign and banish painful memories of last season.

Meanwhile, for Inter, it was a confidence-boosting victory following a catastrophic loss in the Champions League final.

Chivu addressed the press after the game, urging everyone to stay calm and work hard.

“We showed aggression,” Chivu stated. “We approached the match well and looked for vertical play.

“I’m happy, but of course, the credit goes entirely to the players, and they deserve it.

“Today they put in a great performance, but I’d also say let’s stay calm because the season is long.

“Today was an unknown after just four weeks of work, but the lads made themselves immediately available. They produced a great display.”

Furthermore, he urged his Inter stars not to get carried away.

“The things I didn’t like, I’ll tell the players in private,” Chivu added. “We must never be satisfied.

“I saw good things, and I’m glad we didn’t concede. There had been some criticism about that.

“I saw motivated, determined players who didn’t want to let in a goal.

“But calm, I repeat, it’s only the first match. There’s still a lot of work to do.”

Then, he admitted he liked how some players behaved after being subbed off.

“As long as someone is unhappy when I take them off… then there will be controversy, cases…

“It always happens, this is football. I’ve never seen players happy to be subbed.

“I try to be myself, consistent and credible, to raise my voice when needed.

“Sometimes I exaggerate, but they are great men and great athletes who overlook it when I do.

“We’ve made some agreements on certain things, and I’m happy to work with mature men who are still motivated to achieve something important this season.”

Petar Sucic & Nicolo Barella

Like Chivu, Petar Sucic excelled in his first Serie A appearance at San Siro.

Indeed, the 21-year-old delivered an assist in the first half and enjoyed a great game overall.

“I’m happy for Petar. Playing your first match at San Siro isn’t easy, and I can say that as someone who’s played quite a few games here.

“He put in a display full of quality and personality, immediately embracing the role and following our tactical demands.

“He even showed me things I hadn’t seen before, like his aggression and willingness to battle.

“And he delivered a great performance because he played both as a mezzala and in a two-man midfield.”

Meanwhile, Nicolo Barella returned to his prime to help Inter sweep Torino away in the midfield battle.

“He immediately made himself available,” Chivu stated. “I had him in mind for the regista role after seeing him play there in Bari.

“But it’s never easy to convince a player to play in a position he might not enjoy. I have versatile players.”

French Specialty

Marcus Thuram won the ‘Man of the Match’ award after scoring a brace in arguably his best league performance in 2025.

However, he wasn’t the only French player on the scoresheet.

Minutes after coming on, newcomer Ange-Yoan Bonny opened his Nerazzurri account with a poacher’s finish.

“I’m already learning French,” Chivu joked. “I’m happy for Bonny and Thuram, but also for the others.

“But I’m especially happy for Bonny because he broke the ice in his first game at San Siro, I saw a very happy kid. He’ll be a big help to us.

“As for Marcus, I’m happy because he scored twice and – as he himself said – he knows he needs to keep up the consistency.”

On the other hand, Andy Diouf made his first appearance for Inter, coming on as a late substitute.

Yet, there’s plenty of time for the 22-year-old to make his mark in the Nerazzurri shirt.

“He’s a defensive midfielder, a mezzala because of the progression he has,” Chivu claimed. “We didn’t have a left-footer like him in the squad.

“I wanted to reward him, make him feel important when I decided to bring him on.

“And I put him in difficulty because he had never played that role before.

“I don’t even know if he has unpacked his bags yet, so he shouldn’t be judged. I’m just happy he could taste San Siro and the Inter environment.”

Finally, Chivu compared his Inter debuts as a player and a manager.

“I don’t remember the one as a player because I had head surgery – let’s say that as a joke,” he continued.

“Of course, the emotion is there, but it clears my mind. Entering this wonderful stadium brings back memories.

“But the most important thing is not me, it’s the players, because they’re fundamental. I’m proud of how they’ve welcomed me.”
