Josep Martinez will be looking to usurp Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer for a starting berth between the posts next season.

The 26-year-old is currently finalizing his transfer from Genoa to the Italian champions. The Nerazzurri should announce the transfer in the coming hours.

The Spaniard is a Barcelona youth product who also had a stint at RB Leipzig. He has been plying his trade at Genoa since 2022, and managed to impress during the previous Serie A campaign.

Therefore, Inter pinpointed him as the right profile to replace Emil Audero.

The latter spent the previous campaign on loan at San Siro, but the management opted against keeping him on a permanent basis, so he has now returned to his parent club Sampdoria.

But while Audero never truly posed a threat to Sommer’s place in the starting lineup, Martinez will arrive with bigger ambitions, explains La Gazzetta dello Sport via FcInterNews.

As the pink newspaper tells it, the Spanish custodian will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Julio Cesar and Andre Onana.

The two former Nerazzurri goalkeepers managed to claim starting roles following their respective moves to Inter by usurping their older and more established colleagues.

In Cesar’s case, it was Francesco Toldo who lost his starting berth. Two years ago, Onana displaced Samir Handanovic who had been the club’s first choice for over a decade.

Hence, Martinez will be looking to replicate the scenario by overtaking Sommer.

Nevertheless, it won’t be an easy task as the Switzerland international remains in good shape at the age of 35.

In any case, Inter will splash 13 million euros plus 2M in bonuses to sign the Spaniard from the Ligurians. The shot-stopper will ink a contract valid until June 2029.
