Inter Milan are desperate to avoid the “trap” of facing Cagliari, knowing all too well the pitfalls of facing “smaller” Serie A teams.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, highlight the importance of this evening’s match.

Inter Milan face Cagliari in Serie A this evening.

On paper, there is certainly very little doubt that the Nerazzurri re the favourites.

However, that is certainly no reason for Inter to take the points for granted.

The Nerazzurri have dropped points against teams in the bottom half of the table already this season.

Moreover, the manner in which this has happened has been instructive.

In Inter’s Serie A opener away to Genoa, they had led twice and appeared to be cruising to a win. However, they conceded twice, including a stoppage time equalizer from the penalty spot.

Then, in one of the least inspiring performances of the entire season, Inter needed a late equalizer from Denzel Dumfries to bail them out for a 1-1 draw away to Monza.

Inter Milan had seemingly gotten such dropped points out of their system. They have built up a run of relentless consistency against the “smaller” teams in the winter.

However, last weekend’s Serie A clash with Parma was a timely reminder for Inter.

The Nerazzurri were 2-0 up away at the Stadio Ennio Tardini. There seemed to be little doubt as to the way of the result.

But Parma had all the motivation in the world to get an upset result in the relegation battle. And little to lose in the second half, playing in front of their own fans.

The Gialloblu deservedly turned it around, earning a point. And from that point, Inter were unable to turn the momentum back in their favour.

That will give plenty of inspiration to Cagliari who, like Parma, will be keen on a big result to bolster their chances of top flight survival.

Inter will therefore understand just how much they cannot underestimate the Rossoblu.

The watchword, accordingly, will be to avoid complacency at all costs.
