Inter have made their stance clear in recent rounds of contract extension negotiations with big name players.

The Nerazzurri have been hardline in terms of what they’ve offered in terms of wages.

Inter have made clear that they’re not going to go outside what they see as feasible parameters in an offer to any one player, no matter how important to the team.

That means that Nicolo Barella recently signed a new deal worth €6.5 million net per season plus add-ons.

This is less than Barella could undoubtedly be earning elsewhere. But Inter made their stance clear, and the Italian international decided to commit his future on terms that were feasible for the club.

The same looks to be true of Inter captain Lautaro Martinez.

The Argentine has yet to put pen to paper on a long-term extension like Barella. But as with Barella, his desire to stay at Inter looks to have been more decisive than trying to maximize his earnings.

Martinez and his agent had asked Inter for a big increase in wages.

The Nerazzurri made clear, however, that €9.5 million net per season plus add-ons is as high as they can go.

In the end, those are the terms that Martinez accepted.

This summer, Hakan Calhanoglu also reportedly asked for a new contract.

The Turk had received an offer from Bayern Munich on higher terms than he has at the Nerazzurri.

But Inter made clear that they would not match Bayern’s offer.

In spite of this, Calhanoglu declared that he would stay.

Now, it is the turn of Dumfries.

Reportedly, the Dutchman’s initial request in terms of wages to sign a new deal was for €5.5 million net per season – more than double the €2.5 million he currently earns.

But Inter do not see this as within their wage structure.

Therefore, the Nerazzurri’s offer has stood at €4 million net per season. Take it or leave it.

And by all accounts, Dumfries appears inclined to take it.

The 28-year-old wants to stay at Inter. And the example of Barella, Martinez, and Calhanoglu has made him understand that if he wants to do so, he must accept terms that work for the club.
