Simone Inzaghi’s plan to bring Lautaro Martinez back to form will include increasing the striker’s workload and rotating him to manage his energy wisely, as Inter hope to see their captain end a lengthy goal drought as soon as possible.

The World Cup and Copa America winner with Argentina has yet to score this season, remaining scoreless in all five games he played for the Nerazzurri in Serie A and Champions League.

Lautaro has piled up a series of under-par displays that are affecting his side’s start to the season.

Inter used to be hugely reliant on a player who was their top scorer last season, with 24 goals from 33 Serie A games, which propelled them to their 20th Scudetto.

Having picked up just eight points from their first five Serie A outings, the Nerazzurri feel that Lautaro’s return to fitness is key to improving their form, which is why coach Inzaghi is laying out a plan to end his struggles.

Lautaro will increase training time and accept Inzaghi’s rotations in plan to return to form

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Lautaro Martinez is set to increase the number of his training sessions and the time spent at Inter’s training centre.

This is a plan shared with coach Inzaghi and his staff to bridge the gap in physical condition that currently separates him from the rest of the squad.

Aware of his current poor form, Lautaro is reportedly open to Inzaghi’s decision not to always start him so that he can manage his energy wisely within a busy game schedule.

After playing 44 competitive games for the Nerazzurri last season, Lautaro set off for the United States, where he took part in all of Argentina’s six games in the Copa America during the summer, giving a crucial contribution to his national team’s win with five goals, including one in the final against Colombia.

The tournament ended mid-July, leaving the striker with little time to rest. Lautaro even decided to reduce his holiday time and return to Milan earlier than expected on August 6, as Mehdi Taremi’s injury in the pre-season caused Inter concern ahead of their Serie A debut with Genoa.

However, such a lack of rest is seemingly taking a toll on Lautaro’s condition now, something that he is fully aware of, as he admitted after Inter’s recent defeat against Milan: “I feel that responsibility and realise I am not doing what I did last season. I’m lagging behind, but all I can do is keep working to get stronger.”
