With Arsenal set to lose Jorginho and Thomas Partey this summer, the club is looking to revamp its midfield via the transfer window.
AS, incoming Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is eyeing a move for Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes to fill one of the gaping holes in the engine room. He has spoken to the player’s inner circle.
Arsenal have been linked with a move to Guimaraes before, but it appears Berta is keen on the Brazilian and would love to bring him to North London.
Berta’s interest in Guimaraes comes as no surprise, as during his time at Atletico Madrid, he had set up a clause to sign Guimaraes from Brazilian club Athletico Paranaense after they concluded a deal for Renan Lodi.
Unfortunately, Atletico never took that option and let Guimaraes walk to Lyon, where he established himself as one of the best young midfielders in Europe before joining Newcastle. Berta is looking to address that mistake at Arsenal.
The Gunners could use a box-to-box dynamo like Guimaraes. No player in Europe’s top five leagues has won more ground duels, won more fouls or completed more through-balls than the 27-year-old this season, per Squawka.
He is a two-way midfielder who will allow Arsenal star Declan Rice to sit and anchor the engine room. Captain Martin Odegaard and Guimaraes can venture forward with a licence from Mikel Arteta.
Signing Guimaraes would be a massive coup for Arsenal.
Interestingly, he is not the only midfielder on the Arsenal shopping list, with the report also mentioning their interest in signing Martin Zubimendi.
Arsenal have been trying to close a deal for the Spanish holding midfielder. They have not managed to get it over the line, but there is an expectation that he will leave Real Sociedad for North London.
