After weeks of speculation, Barcelona appear to be on the verge of securing the exit of goalkeeper Inaki Pena.

The Spaniard, who was linked with a move to a host of Spanish clubs throughout this month, looks to be on his way to Elche CF.

This comes on the back of reports suggesting that Pena has already signed a contract extension with Barcelona until 2029.

Inaki Pena seen at the airport

Having already signed a new deal at Barça, Inaki Pena was seen at the airport, heading towards Alicante to complete his move to Elche.

The image was shared by Diario SPORT journalist Carlos Monfort, who suggests that Pena will undergo a medical test with Elche tomorrow.

Once the tests are complete, Pena will be officially announced as an Elche player later in the day or the day after.

Barcelona, too, are expected to announce the deal at the same time while also confirming that the goalkeeper has indeed signed a contract extension until 2029.

The reason Barcelona had to extend Pena’s contract was to have greater control of the goalkeeper’s future, as the player was struggling to attract lucrative offers.

With Pena’s current contract expiring in 2026, Barcelona simply couldn’t take the risk of losing full control of the goalkeeper’s future.

A move to Elche should give Pena the opportunity to prove his pedigree in the Spanish top flight.

At Elche, Pena will be competing with Matias Dituro and new signing Alejandro Iturbe for a place in the starting eleven.

It must be noted that Pena is not completely out of the picture yet, as far as his Barcelona future is concerned.

With Wojciech Szczesny likely playing his final season and Marc-Andre ter Stegen facing an uncertain future, there is every chance Pena could return to Barcelona and become the club’s No. 2 in the years to come.
