With a 2–0 win over Mainz on Saturday, Hoffenheim took an important step towards securing Bundesliga survival. Yet despite the result, head coach Christian Ilzer’s future at the club remains in serious doubt.

According to Kicker, rumors are circulating that Hoffenheim’s management are planning to part ways with Ilzer and his staff at the end of the season — regardless of how the campaign ends.

The Austrian is reportedly no longer seen as the right man to lead the desired tactical and long-term structural transformation.

The report also claims that SC Paderborn head coach Lukas Kwasniok has been identified as a potential successor, with Hoffenheim said to have made initial contact about bringing the 43-year-old to Sinsheim. Kwasniok is under contract with the 2. Bundesliga side until 2026, but his deal is believed to include a release clause.

Meanwhile, discontent within the squad appears to be growing. Veteran forward Andrej Kramaric, who scored both goals against Mainz, has previously been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the club’s direction. He continued in that tone after Saturday’s win.

“This is only my second or third interview this season. It’s no coincidence that I speak so rarely,” the TSG star said.

“I always speak honestly. And the truth is, there’s so much more potential. We can do much better for the club. I think we deserve much more.”
