Spain booked their place in the semi-final of Euro 2024 with a win over Germany on Friday night, but the match wasn’t without controversy.

Even days later, everyone is still talking about the controversial call, or lack thereof, of a handball involving Marc Cucurella in the second half of the tie against Germany.

Cucurella spoke at a press conference with the Spanish national team on Sunday, and as per Diario AS, the 25-year-old left-back was pretty clear on his thoughts.

It hit my hand, but I was calm when I saw the referee. If the experts say it’s not a handball, it’s not a handball.“, Cucurella said when facing the media.

Many German fans are convinced that if the handball was given, the ensuing penalty could have turned the tide and helped them progress.

However, Spain went on to score right at the death of extra time to crush the German faithful’s dreams, thanks to Mikel Merino’s goal.

Cucurella also spoke about the range of ages in the Spain camp, adding: “I think we have created a good group. We have a mix of veterans and very young guys and that makes it all very enjoyable.”

It remains to be seen whether this mixed Spanish group can keep their chemistry going as they look ahead to Munich on Tuesday night, where they will face a French side which has failed to score in open play so far this tournament.
