With Pep Guardiola confirmed to be Manchester City’s manager for the next two seasons he will be tasked with leading City’s rebuild on the pitch. In wide areas teams are utilising quick and direct wingers. If football has evolved it will be interesting to see Pep Guardiola’s take on it as he leads Manchester City’s rebuild.

Pep Guardiola has a point. There has been a shift in how teams play this season. Teams such as Bournemouth, Brighton, Newcastle and Liverpool do have bigger and more athletic midfielders. They are also technically gifted. Each of the teams named is also dynamic going forward, especially out wide. Although they all don’t play the same way they do share similar traits. The same can be said for Real Madrid. Each one of those teams has caused Manchester City issues this season. It appears that Pep Guardiola is aware of this fact and where the game is heading. Pep Guardiola’s take on the modern tactics in the game could be fascinating to watch unfold.

Will Pep Guardiola add this element to his tactical set-up for next season?

Pep Guardiola has said on countless occasions that his current squad cannot play in the way some of City’s rivals do. They simply don’t have the players to play that way. Not the way Manchester City’s current squad is currently constructed. That’s where the summer transfer window will be interesting to watch unfold. It does seem that City may target more athletic, but still technically proficient midfielders. If they can add that to Pep Guardiola’s squad it may mean that Guardiola is adapting his tactics to the way the game is being played currently. If Manchester City targets another winger and a full-back that may also provide another clue. That is definitely something to watch for next summer.

But it is clear that football has evolved. It will now be interesting to see Pep Guardiola’s take on it as he will likely maintain his current tactical set-up but add a more modern outlook to it. In all honesty that is something to look forward to. It will also be fascinating to watch unfold if it is a path Pep Guardiola and Manchester City do decide to go down.
