In an interview with France Football, Mohamed Salah (32) discussed his ambitions for the rest of his career and revealed he would like to win the Ballon d’Or before he retires.
Earlier this season, when Liverpool were challenging for all four trophies, Salah was deemed the early favourite to win the individual prize awarded by France Football. However, following the Reds’ exit in the UEFA Champions League at the hands of PSG and their defeat in the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle United, the Egypt international’s chances seem to have diminished, with Ousmane Dembélé (26) the new favourite to win the award according to the bookmakers.
Despite disappointments in three competitions, Salah still managed to win the Premier League this season – the 20th in Liverpool’s history. The 32-year-old has also had the best statistical season of his professional career, he has managed 46 goal contributions in 35 league appearances this season.
Commenting on his chances and ambitions to win the Ballon d’Or, the Liverpool forward said, “It’s not in my hands, but obviously, one day I would like to win the Ballon d’Or for my people. When you come from a village in Egypt, as a child, it’s difficult to dream of the Ballon d’Or. It was when I came to Liverpool that I started to think that, maybe, one day… But if I don’t win it, my career will still be successful.”
The attacker also noted he has lots of opportunities to win trophies next season and that there is a trend of players winning the award in their thirties: “I’m only 32, several winners in recent years have been in their thirties. So, who knows? And then, next season promises to be exciting with the defence of our title with Liverpool and the Champions League, the CAN with Egypt and the World Cup.”
