Enzo Maresca believes there are a number of different reasons as to why Cole Palmer is currently struggling for form.

The 22-year-old is currently going through the longest barren spell of his fledgling Chelsea career and hasn’t scored since the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth in January.

Palmer surprisingly started in the shock 2-1 defeat to Legia Warsaw on Thursday night, but was unable to have a positive impact on proceedings.

Maresca on Palmer struggles

Despite his struggles the England international is still Chelsea’s top scorer in the league with 14 goals, whilst he also has seven assists.

The goals haven’t just dried up for Palmer, Nicolas Jackson also hasn’t scored in 2025, and Maresca admitted if the duo don’t start scoring Chelsea won’t qualify for the Champions League.

Palmer’s form is certainly a concern with Chelsea needing him to return to form for their difficult run-in, and Maresca has opened up on his recent struggles.

“I think there are different reasons why,” he told his pre-match press conference.

“For sure, a moment where you struggle is part of their career, their process, their season. Last year he had a fantastic season.

“This season we said many times that the way the team approaches him is in a different way. Most of the time he’s being marked man to man. That is more difficult for any player in the world.

“But even with that, he scored 14 goals in 20 games, the first 20 games. So for me it’s just a matter of a bad moment, and in the moment that he’s able to score a goal, it will probably change again.”

Palmer has actually created more chances this season, but he’s almost missed more chances than he did in the last campaign.

There’s no doubt about his ability, but it’s clear even he’s suffering with a lack of confidence right now, but it will likely take just one goal to get back in the groove with Chelsea hoping that will be against Fulham on Sunday.
