Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was forced to name eight youngsters on the bench in his side’s narrow loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Seven of those eight are part of the United academy that has a proud legacy of producing big talents.

With many fans hoping Amorim would unleash youth in the second half, the coach had other ideas up his sleeve.

The head coach sent Chido Obi off the bench in the 91st minute and did not make any other substitutions.

He admitted that while fans may have differing opinions, it’s his responsibility to safeguard the development of the young players.

Reputed journalist Andy Mitten echoed Amorim’s post-match sentiments.

He told Sky Sports:”I speak to a lot of people in the club and no, [they’re not ready for first-team football]. I know fans just say ‘Throw them in, it can’t be worse’ but actually, it can be worse.

“These players need protecting, introducing in the right environment.

“Maybe needs must due to injuries but I speak to people in the club and nobody says to me, ‘Yeah, this guy is ready to play first-team football at the moment,’ because they’re just not ready.

“There will be a lot of support for the young players from Man Utd fans, it’s the legacy but it’s a really difficult environment for the young players to be introduced into the team.”

Young players will play at the right time

It is understandable that there’s excitement surrounding the idea of giving a young, homegrown player a chance on the big stage, but rushing them in too early could have catastrophic consequences.

The average age of United’s bench on Sunday was just 19.3 years.

Amorim wisely pointed out that the Premier League is the toughest competition in the world.

Tottenham are a team of high quality and can seize control of a match in an instant.

There is no denying the immense talent of United’s starlets, but excelling on the big stage requires much more than just raw ability.

To shine at a big club like United, a player needs more than just skill – they need immense mental strength.

Antony impressed everyone at Ajax but failed to replicate his form at Old Trafford due to intense media scrutiny and mental pressure.

He joined Real Betis last month and has bagged three goals and one assist in four games.

Amorim has hinted that young players will get their opportunity this season, and United supporters should trust their manager to make the right call for their development.
