Chelsea legend Claude Makelele has revealed why he loves midfielder Moises Caicedo “a lot” in an interview with the club’s website.

Caicedo took time to find his feet following his then British record transfer from Brighton in 2023, but started to find form over the second half of the campaign.

The Ecuador international went to another level under Enzo Maresca last season, and established himself as arguably the best midfielder in the Premier League.

Makelele on Caicedo

Caicedo played a key role last season and started all 38 of Chelsea’s Premier League games as the Blues secured a top four finish and returned to the Champions League.

The 23-year-old also scored in the Conference League final and was a vital part of the team which won the Club World Cup earlier this month.

There’s been no mention of the price tag given how well the former Brighton man has played, and Makelele has now shared his opinion on the  Ecuadorian.

“I love him a lot, because when he started at Chelsea we talked together, and he was happy to come to Chelsea for his own story,” he told Chelsea’s website.

“He didn’t want to be compared to me, he wanted to do the ‘Caicedo role’.”

Cole Palmer will get most of the headlines, but it’s arguable Caicedo is Chelsea’s most important player given how he makes the team tick.

Chelsea midfield even stronger

Midfield has been arguably been Chelsea’s strongest part of the squad with Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia.

The midfield has been bolstered by the arrival of Andrey Santos, who impressed on loan at Strasbourg last season, whilst Dario Essugo has arrived from Sporting Lisbon.

Essugo has been signed as back-up to Caicedo and he will be able to fill in when Chelsea need to give him a rest, which will be crucial throughout the season.
