Erik ten Hag says he has “totally ignored” the performance of his Man Utd side in the earlier season defeat to Tottenham.

United were beaten 3-0 after Bruno Fernandes was given a straight red card, which was later overturned.

ten Hag’s team were widely criticised for their performance in the game, with former player and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville labelling it “an absolute disgrace”.

United have responded by drawing against Porto, Aston Villa and Fenerbahce, and beating Brentford since that defeat and ten Hag says it proves his team’s resilience.

He said: “I deny that game. I ignore that game against Spurs because we were downsized to ten with a 1-0 losing position and then the red card was overturned.

“I totally ignore that game. It’s not a fair assessment of the team to take this into consideration because we didn’t have the chance to bounce back.

“You can see the team is resilient, the team is determined, against Brentford, two tough away games now in Europa against Porto and Fenerbahce, this team has character and this team showed fighting spirit and the determination to win games.

“It was not fair to assess the team because of the sending off of one of our best players and our captain. It was overturned, everyone agreed it was not the right decision, it was injustice.

“It was also injustice to assess the team on their performance against Spurs. Of course it was a tough first half but in that period I remember some very good chances and the team didn’t get time to bounce back from that position.

“This team is resilient to bounce back between games and also in games.”
