Ange Postecoglou hit back at his critics and claimed he is “100% confident” that Tottenham are in a better position now as a club than when he first took over.

Spurs find themselves 15th in the Premier League table going into the game against Leicester having lost five of their last six league games.

But asked whether there has been any conversations behind the scenes to try and get to the bottom of his team’s poor form, Postecoglou simply replied: “It’s just injuries. You can walk outside and say ‘jeeze it’s really bright’ and look at the sun and think ‘maybe it’s not the sun.’ But it’s the sun, mate. We’ve just got injuries.

“You can do a million investigations and talk to anonymous sources but you don’t need to talk to anonymous sources you can talk to me. Every decision that is made is on me. I’m responsible for it. I’m the one that is guiding this.

“If you’re looking for a head on a stick take mine. But I am absolutely 100 per cent confident that we are in a much better place in all areas of the club today than we were when I started.”

Postecoglou also says he hopes to have central defenders Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven available again in the near future.

Both were injured in the defeat to Chelsea in November having only just returned to action.

But the Spurs boss believes the duo are now closing in on a return in a big boost for his injury-hit squad.

“We got him (Romero) back training. Him and Micky (van de Ven) are the two next (back). Out of the long term ones anyway. And they’ve still got a bit to do in terms of getting some training into them with the team.

“It was good to get him (Romero) involved (in training). Not just for him but for the players themselves because they need a bit of help and encouragement. And seeing Cuti training with them gives them a big lift. And Micky’s not too far away.”

Tottenham had just 13 fit senior players in Thursday’s win against Hoffenheim, and have been dealt another blow of late with striker Dominic Solanke now confirmed as out for six weeks.

Djed Spence and Pape Sarr are still doubtful for the weekend’s clash with Leicester, meanwhile. “Djed is still sore from the weekend and is a doubt for this weekend as he’s got a knock,” Postecoglou said. “Pape is still a doubt and Reggy (Reguillon) should be okay.”
