We asked our Hull City fan pundit what he thought about Greg Taylor as a potential Ryan Giles replacement
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Hull City have been told to sign Celtic left-back Greg Taylor this month, with the Scottish international deemed an improvement on Ryan Giles.
As exclusively reported by Football League World, Middlesbrough are in advanced talks to sign Giles from Hull, and Ruben Selles will be looking to bolster his defensive ranks as a result.
One player the Tigers have been linked with is Celtic's Scottish international left-back Greg Taylor, with Championship rivals QPR also keen, along with European sides Trabzonspor and Dinamo Zagreb, as per Hull Live.
The 27-year-old is out of contract at Celtic Park at the end of the season, meaning he could be available on a cut-price deal this month, and Hull have been told to get a deal done for the 14-cap Scotland international.
We asked our Hull City fan pundit, Ryan Frankish, whether he thought that Taylor would be an upgrade on Giles, who is set to complete a move to Boro, and he believes the Scottish international definitely would.
Speaking to Football League World, Ryan said: "I think it would be a good upgrade on Giles. At the moment, the way Giles is performing and where his confidence is at, I think anything would be an improvement on him.
"At the end of the day, the one thing that’s free in football is hard work. You can always graft, and while he might be lacking the quality at the minute, his head's not in the game, and it hasn’t been since August or even when Rosenior was sacked, so in my opinion, anything would be an improvement.
“To be bringing in a solid left-back like Greg Taylor, he’s done more than enough to prove he’s solid at this level, because the Scottish league is somewhere similar and not only that, with his contract up at the end of the season, we’re only Celtic’s real chance of a fee so it’s an attractive deal for all parties involved.
“It also adds to the core of the team as well. I think it’s good that we aren’t just pinching someone from Turkey, we’re keeping a British core in the team with our signings so far, the likes of Gelhardt, Crooks and fingers crossed Greg Taylor, so I think it’s positive.”
Taylor might be as flashy as Giles, who offers a real threat going forward, but this is a player who has played on the international stage and in the Champions League for a successful Celtic side, so he'd certainly strengthen Selles' starting XI.
There's a reason why so many clubs are keen to sign Taylor, and there's even a chance he could stay at Celtic, as per Hull Live, with Brendan Rodgers said to enjoy working with him.
As Ryan alluded to, Giles has not been at his best this season, and moving him on and replacing him with Taylor looks to make sense from Hull's point of view.
With a wealth of experience, Taylor would improve Hull's side at an important point of the season, with the Tigers currently battling to avoid relegation to League One, and it would be a surprise if Hull didn't pull away from the drop zone given some of the quality they're looking to bring in this month.
