Howe’s striker dilemma ahead of Liverpool clash

Eddie Howe has made his position clear on Newcastle United’s striking options as his side prepare for Monday night’s meeting with Liverpool. The Newcastle manager confirmed that Alexander Isak will not feature at Anfield, with Anthony Gordon expected to lead the line once again.

Newcastle’s search for another forward has stretched through the summer, with pursuits of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko all ending in disappointment. The club continue to monitor Yoane Wissa, but even his arrival would not necessarily signal Isak’s departure, as Wissa is viewed primarily as a long-term successor to Callum Wilson.

Isak future remains unresolved

Despite ongoing speculation, Isak looks increasingly likely to remain at St James’ Park beyond the transfer window. Howe has suggested that Newcastle’s ownership group, PIF, will not sanction his departure unless a suitable replacement is secured.

Asked directly whether the club would risk losing their leading striker without reinforcement, Howe was unequivocal:

“I don’t think the club will allow that situation to happen. We certainly can’t go through the season with no recognised striker at the football club – and that’s no disrespect to Will Osula.”

The Newcastle manager was keen to praise Osula’s progress, but underlined the risks of entering a campaign without proven Premier League firepower.

Isak’s importance to Howe’s project

Statistics underline why Howe is so reluctant to countenance Isak’s exit. The Swedish international scored 27 goals across all competitions last season, comfortably outstripping his nearest teammates. Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon each managed nine, while Sandro Tonali contributed six.

For Howe, that level of production is irreplaceable at this stage of the market. It explains why PIF are expected to resist any move for Isak unless they can deliver an alternative of genuine quality.

Biggest challenge yet for Isak

Although few would rule out a late twist before deadline day, the prospect of Isak departing grows less likely with each passing day. Newcastle have attempted to bolster their attacking ranks but have repeatedly come up short.

If Isak remains, September could mark the start of a defining period in his Newcastle career. The challenge will not only be leading the line on the pitch, but also convincing supporters that he remains fully committed to Howe’s project. For a striker who has already delivered so much, this could represent his most important task yet.
