Tom Brady has congratulated Birmingham City after they secured their instant return to the Championship on Tuesday evening with a 2-1 win over Peterborough United.

Blues took the lead in the 19th minute through an Alfie May header, before the hosts hit back almost immediately at the Weston Homes Stadium, with Kwame Poku firing in his 12th League One goal in just 24 games this season.

However, Chris Davies' side held their nerve and found the would-be winner before half-time, as Taylor Gardner-Hickman struck the ball underneath Nicholas Bilokapic to take all three points and win promotion to the second tier.

Birmingham's focus will now turn to the weekend, when they face Peterborough once again, but this time at Wembley Stadium in the Vertu Trophy final. Victory would all but secure a double for the West Midlands outfit, as they close in on the league title.

Tom Brady sends message to Birmingham City squad after securing promotion

It was an incredible night for Blues in Cambridgeshire, with the lucky supporters who were in the away end watching their club secure their first promotion since 2009, when they finished second in the Championship as they returned to the Premier League.

Celebrations will have lasted long into the night, but it is just the first step in Birmingham's rise back to where they were throughout the 2000s, and minority shareholder and NFL legend, Brady, was keen to share with his followers on Instagram the fact that his team are on the rise.

He posted on his story: "Straight back up to the @eflchampionship, and not done yet.

"@nfl fans are getting a crash course in the English football pyramid."

Working alongside Tom Wagner, the club's owner, the 47-year-old has helped oversee an historic season so far for Blues, but it is one that is far from over, with the League One title still to be secured.

However, there is still the opportunity for that to happen this weekend, if second-place Wrexham fail to beat Wigan Athletic on Saturday at the Brick Community Stadium. The Red Dragons have won four of their last five matches, and they will be keen to push Birmingham as far as they can.

But it does feel as though it is a matter of when, and not if, Davies' side lift the trophy, and they will want to secure it as soon as possible.

Birmingham City will be looking to repeat their antics on Tuesday at Wembley

Birmingham's strength in depth has allowed them to fight on multiple fronts this season, and after making it difficult for Premier League side Newcastle United in the FA Cup, their attention on the cup front has been on the Vertu Trophy.

Tuesday was somewhat of a dress rehearsal for this weekend, as Blues face Peterborough once again, but this time at Wembley.

It is just their second visit to the stadium, and supporters will be hoping for a repeat of the scenes in the Carabao Cup in 2011, when they beat Arsenal 2-1 to secure their first major honour since 1963, when they won the same competition.

Nevertheless, it cannot be understated the strength that Birmingham have shown this season, and while they have had significant financial backing, they have still been able to follow through with the first of their targets in this new era.
