The Under-21 European Championships are underway in Slovenia, with a number of Premier League stars ready to represent their nations.
Lee Carsley’s England side got off to a winning start. The Young Lions defeated Croatia 3-1. Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott scored the opening goal, assisted by Manchester City’s James McAtee, who captained England. There were also assists for Newcastle’s Timo Livramento and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.
Liverpool’s Jarrell Quansah and Tottenham Hostpur’s Archie Gray played a full 90 minutes in defence. Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri did not start the game, although the 18-year-old came off the bench for the final 20 minutes.
The Netherlands salvaged a point in injury time in their first game. It was a disappointing start to their tournament as they drew 2-2 with Finland. Aston Villa’s Ian Maatsen played in central midfield for the Dutch team.
Ajax defender Jorrel Hato also played a full 90 minutes. The centre-back could be on his way to the Premier League this summer. Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are all interested in signing the 19-year-old this off-season.
Germany began the tournament in impressive fashion, securing a comfortable 3-0 victory over Slovenia. Brighton’s Brajan Gruda started on the right-wing for the Germans. All three goals in the match were scored by Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade. The six foot six striker has been linked to Chelsea in recent days.
Newcastle striker William Osula scored the winning goal for Denmark in their opener. The Danes came from behind twice to edge out Ukraine 3-2. Brentford midfielder Yehor Yarmolyuk featured for the defeated Ukrainians.
Portugal and France shared the points after a goalless draw. The Portuguese side featured Southampton’s Matheus Fernandes and Wolves’ Carlos Forbs. Spurs duo Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert started on the two wings for France.
Spain defeated the hosts in the opening game of the tournament. Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph fired in a goal, whilst Aston Villa right-back Andres Garcia was an unused substitute. The Spanish side won 3-2 against Slovakia.
Italy also started the competition with a victory. Leeds’ Willy Gnonto started for the Blues as they won 1-0 against Romania.
