Deals of the past are coming back to help the Blues this summer.
Jobe Bellingham is edging closer to a move from Sunderland to Borussia Dortmund, which could land Birmingham City a few million pounds.
It was revealed on Monday evening that the 19-year-old midfielder had decided that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his brother and join the German talent developers this summer.
Bild first reported the news of Bellingham's choice, following previous talks with other Bundesliga clubs, including Frankfurt, which were held following Sunderland's promotion via the play-offs.
There is a €40 million (~ £33.75 million) release clause in the contract that he signed last summer, amid interest from Brentford Palace, but Dortmund expect to seal the signing of the starlet for a fee in the region of €30 million (~ £25 million), according to Keith Downie.
The two parties are in advanced talks over the deal, with Sunderland's owner, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, and sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, resigned to the fact that one of their best-ever investments will vacate the Stadium of Light this summer and won't be able to help them in the Premier League, as per the Northern Echo.
The Black Cats paid around £3 million to sign Bellingham back in 2023, on the same day that his brother, Jude, joined Real Madrid from Dortmund for an initial £88.5 million. As part of that deal, Sunderland reportedly included a 15 per cent sell-on clause, which would give the Blues a share of any future profit that they made from selling Bellingham.
If the midfielder joins Dortmund for the £25 million fee that has been reported, then that would land Birmingham just over £3 million. The deal's structure - whether the whole amount will be paid up front or in installments - will dictate when City will get their cash bonus.
Birmingham aren't exactly in need of extra money. Their chairman, Tom Wagner, has said that he expects them to have as good a chance as any club in the Championship of being promoted next season. They are also set to compete, alongside Wrexham, with the newly relegated Premier League sides - Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton - for transfer targets this summer, as per Sky Sports.
The Blues are very rich, but that will not stop them from hoping to see their former Championship rivals negotiating hard with Dortmund. The more money Sunderland can get out of the former Champions League finalists, the more Birmingham will net too.
It won't be easy for them to try and drive the price up, though, given Bellingham's stance that Dortumd is the one for him. They will, however, look to get a hefty sell-on fee included in the deal, like City did when they sold the 19-year-old to the Black Cats.
