The ambition of the US owners at St. Andrew’s is well-documented, and they have backed the boss once again with some statement signings, with Kyogo Furuhashi, Demarai Gray and Tommy Doyle just some of the new recruits through the door.

Even with the season weeks away, Blues look to have the core of their squad in place, but they are still working to make improvements, with FLW exclusively revealing the Midlands outfit are close to signing Marvin Ducksch from Werder Bremen.

Marvin Ducksch can instantly add to Birmingham City’s attack

At 31, Ducksch is a signing for the here and now, and his objective will be to help Blues to the Premier League this season.

As a forward, fans will naturally immediately look at Ducksch’s goal record - and it’s fair to say that it makes for positive reading.

He has quite an incredible record in Bundesliga II over the years, scoring 70 goals in his last 128 appearances in Germany’s equivalent of the Championship. More impressively, he has been a reliable source of goals in the top-flight, with Ducksch scoring 12, 12 and eight times in the previous three Bundesliga campaigns.

So, Blues would be getting a player who is in his prime and capable of finding the net on a consistent basis.

Marvin Ducksch will provide Birmingham City with a different threat in the final third

Yet, that doesn’t tell the whole story at all with Ducksch, as the ex-Hannover man is much more than a goal threat, as he has posted some superb numbers over the years when it comes to creating chances for himself and his teammates.

Firstly, Ducksch has registered 10 and nine assists in his previous two seasons, which is a great return and shows that he is a selfless player who has the vision and composure to pick the right option when opportunities arise.

When you dig deeper, you see those numbers weren’t luck, as Ducksch ranked very highly for shot-creating actions across the whole of the Bundesliga, especially in 2023/24 where he was among the very best.

That put him above the likes of Niclas Füllkrug and Wout Weghorst, two target men who have played in the Premier League, and were known for their ability to bring others into play.

With Ducksch also scoring high for progressive passes and completed passes, it’s fair to say that he is a creative forward, and it must be reiterated that he is doing this in the Bundesliga, which is obviously a higher standard than the Championship.

Kyogo Furuhashi could benefit from Marvin Ducksch’s arrival at Birmingham City

Therefore, it will be hard for Blues fans not to get excited about what he could add to the team, and one player who will be relishing the prospect of linking up with Ducksch is Furuhashi.

The former Celtic striker is the type of number nine who is always playing on the shoulder, always looking for chances, and his movement is undoubtedly the strongest part of his game.

So, Ducksch seems like the ideal partner for him, and the duo have the pedigree and quality to cause chaos at this level moving forward.

Where that leaves Jay Stansfield remains to be seen, but it’s a nice problem for Davies to have, with Birmingham building a squad that will be the envy of many of their rivals.
