The Cardiff City board have some split opinions on who will take over the Bluebirds in League One.
Cardiff City are reportedly hoping to announce the appointment of a new manager this week, but members of the board are currently split on their opinion of who should take the hotseat.
The Bluebirds have returned to the third tier of English football for the first time in 22 years, with the Welsh side’s fate all sealed after their draw with West Brom on the penultimate game of the campaign.
In a disastrous turn of events, Cardiff will be tasked with gaining immediate promotion back to the second tier, although it will be difficult with the likes of Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United failing to get straight back up after their relegations in the 2023-24 term.
Before adding players during the upcoming transfer window, Cardiff desperately need to appoint a new manager so they can base their summer around the ideas and style of the new coach, as the Welsh side searches for its ninth manager in four years.
Despite the saga looking to be coming to an end, there is still some indecisiveness as to who the best person for the job will be.
As per BBC Sport Wales, sources have indicated to them that some members of the Cardiff City board are divided over the upcoming choice of manager, with some preferring to see an experienced manager enter the frame with a proven track record like Nathan Jones or Des Buckingham, while others favour a different route, with ex-Manchester City academy coach Brian Barry-Murphy and Wales captain Aaron Ramsey also rated highly.
After a sub-committee drafted a shortlist of six candidates, chairman Mehmet Dalman and chief executive Ken Choo have spoken to the coaches and presented their recommendations to owner Vincent Tan, who will ultimately make the final decision.
Despite winning promotion with Charlton at Wembley this season, Jones has outlined how he would like to manage his boyhood club Cardiff in the future, while the likes of Buckingham and former Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt have been interviewed.
It is also reported that Cardiff would need to revamp their structure if they appointed one of Ramsey or Barry-Murphy, with calls being made from supporters and former players for Tan to appoint a sporting director who can be a support line between the manager and board.
It’s an absolute disaster that Cardiff City find themselves playing League One football next season, and they will be aiming to get back to the second tier as quickly as possible to erase the awful memories of this term.
The Bluebirds will be massive players in League One due to the size and previous history of the club, and will be expected to be a dominant force both financially and on the pitch with their quality of players.
But it’s vital the Welsh side get this managerial appointment right, and with many managers possessing vital League One experience that are interested in the post, then it only makes sense for Cardiff to go down that route and guarantee themselves the best chance of immediate promotion.
Des Buckingham will be eager to bounce back from his disappointing exit from Oxford United after doing a sensational job to get them up to the Championship, while Nathan Jones will have the fire in his belly managing the club he’s supported all of his life.
