Birmingham City may have already secured their automatic promotion out of Sky Bet League One, but they have other records on their horizon too.
Birmingham City may have already secured their automatic promotion out of Sky Bet League One, but they have other records on their horizon too.
The Blues can clinch what is an almost certain league title if Wrexham fall to defeat on Saturday, April 12, the day before Birmingham head down Wembley Way to face Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy final.
But, with six games left to go in the league campaign, Chris Davies could lead his team to a tally that would shatter a record that has stood since 1947.
Some 78 years ago, Doncaster Rovers were crowned champions of the third tier.
They lost just three of their 42 games that season and finished the term with what stands as the most wins in a single league campaign.
The South Yorkshire outfit won 33 of their outings, helped by Clarrie Jordan’s golden boot sealing 42 goals.
Currently, Birmingham sit on 29 wins from their 40 games. That means they have to be victorious in all but one of their last half-dozen fixtures in League One to take the record away from Doncaster.
Under much-talked-about American ownership, and with the summer signings of Jay Stansfield and Alfie May leading the line, Birmingham have romped to promotion.
Their victory at Peterborough on Tuesday night sealed what felt like an inevitable return to the Championship after their relegation 12 months prior.
The Blues are on course for a seasonal tally in excess of a century, sitting on 95 points already. They could crush Reading’s EFL best of 106 points, from the 2005/06 campaign, and would manage so if they won four of their last six games, or pick up three wins and draw the other three games.
But, it is a record that has stood for much longer which could soon be shattered too, if Birmingham keep their foot on the gas for the remainder of the term.
Doncaster’s long-lasting EFL accolade looks like it will be shunted from the record books come the end of the season, but Birmingham face a number of struggling teams between now and the start of May.
After their cup final, the Clues host 22nd-placed Crawley Town, before travelling to another side in the relegation zone on Easter Monday. They visit Burton Albion, who could provide a potential banana skin with their fight for survival going down to the wire.
After their trip to the Pirelli Stadium, Birmingham face Stevenage, Mansfield Town, and Blackpool, before the final day.
Ending the season at second-bottom Cambridge United, there is a very real possibility that the Blues could shatter yet more records before the curtain falls on the 2024/25 League One campaign.
It will not be easy, with four of their final six games away from home, but Birmingham will certainly be in with a real chance.
Head coach Davies has steered a commanding and imperious ship all season long, pairing a so-far unbeaten home record with dominance on the road.
The well-backed Blues have proved to be a step above the competition, and could cap off their short stay in League One with a display that breaks a 78-year-old record and is stamped forever in the history books.
