Legendary Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan is keen to stay at the club, despite the ongoing financial turmoil.
According to reports, long-serving Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan is keen to remain at the club beyond this summer despite the ongoing financial turmoil.
The Owls are in a dire situation currently under Dejphon Chansiri, with players and non-playing staff not being paid on time, which has seen the club placed under an embargo until every player is paid everything owed to them.
Reports emerged over the weekend that newly-promoted Wrexham were interested in making a swoop for the veteran midfielder, whose grandfather played for the Red Dragons in the 1950s.
Despite this, cult-hero and club captain Bannan is still keen to remain at Hillsborough beyond the summer, according to the latest reports by the Sheffield Star, and the renewal of his contract was agreed in principle last month.
The tumultuous reign of Chansiri seems to be throwing up new issues every few months for the club to somehow try and navigate through, whilst maintaining their competitiveness in the Championship.
The latest issue to be thrown at Danny Rohl, his staff and players is an embargo, as wages are now not being paid on time by the Thai businessman, and the embargo won't be lifted until every player is paid everything they're owed.
This has obviously made agreeing new contracts extremely difficult, and one of those who could be set to depart on June 30th if nothing is agreed is fan favourite Bannan.
The Scottish midfielder has made nearly 450 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, having called Hillsborough home for the last decade.
According to reports by the Sheffield Star, the skipper doesn't want to call time on his illustrious stint in the Steel City just yet, regardless of the ongoing financial crisis at the club.
The Scot is chasing a spot in the top five Wednesday appearance-makers of all-time, as he hones in on the 450 appearance mark for the club, but the ongoing turmoil has stalled any developments with a contract renewal.
Amid all the highs and more prominent lows of Chansiri's time at the helm of Sheffield Wednesday, Bannan has been a key constant and source of positivity for supporters in the times when they've needed it most.
If a new contract can't be agreed, this could well be the final straw for many supporters with their owner, who has caused the club a lot more harm than good since his acquisition of the Owls in 2015.
The latest embargo is yet another issue caused by the owner's neglect, and could have drastic implications on the results going into next season, especially if this isn't settled in the near future.
With that being said, if Bannan were to leave the club he's called his home for a decade, tensions between supporters and the owner may reach a new level we've yet to see before, so it's hugely important that this debacle gets worked out sooner rather than later.
