Hoffenheim are set to sign Stoke City’s Wouter Burger as their preferred replacement for Anton Stach. The transfer of Stach to Leeds United is expected to be confirmed shortly. The Daily Telegraph reports that Burger travelled to Sinsheim yesterday for a medical. The Bundesliga outfit has agreed to pay Stoke €4-5m for the former Dutch youth international.

The Potters should thus recoup more or less the precise amount they paid Basel to acquire Burger two years ago. The 24-year-old ended up making 78 EFL Championship appearances for the Staffordshire outfit. Burger, like Stach, happens to be an extremely versatile player who can serve at virtually all midfield positions. Burger and Stach also have experience in central defense and higher up in attack.

Hoffenheim have done reasonably well to sign players of a similar mold in replacement departed professionals this summer. FC Basel midfielder Leon Avdullahu – considered a player bearing some resemblance to new Bayern Munich signing Tom Bischof – moved to Sinsheim from Basel a little over a month ago for an €8m fee.
