Kylian Mbappé (26) has been slammed by the Spanish press following Real Madrid’s early elimination from the Champions League. The 15-time champions and current title holders were dumped out of the competition last night when Arsenal defeated them 2-1 (5-1 on aggregate) in front of a packed Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Mbappé had a forgettable night leading the Madrid front three, recording only two shots, neither of which were on target. His biggest moment came when the referee awarded him a penalty following a perceived foul from Declan Rice, but after a lengthy wait, VAR ruled that there had been no infraction.

In the 75th minute, the France captain was substituted with Real Madrid still chasing the game. A decision which has perhaps fuelled a reaction of disappointment from a country that has expected more from the summer’s marquee signing.

Cadena Ser went with the headline, “Mbappé doesn’t even resemble Ronaldo’s Shadow.” While their columnist, Antonio Romero, stated “When Mbappé was substituted… the Bernabéu sounded a bit strange. But for me, the worst thing was that when Brahim Díaz game on they applauded him more than Mbappé. It was like they were saying they should have brought him on earlier.”

AS wrote, “I imagined what would have happened to Cristiano Ronaldo, a gladiator who rebelled like a colossus in the face of these adverse situations. Kylian will never be like him. We have to accept it.”
