There has been plenty of talk about Danny Rohl’s future at Sheffield Wednesday towards the end of the season
Danny Rohl’s future at Sheffield Wednesday has been up in the air for a few weeks now.
The 36-year-old has said his “picture is very clear” about what he wants to do next, though he ominously omitted to declare what the picture entails.
Against a backdrop of a difficult board-level situation at Hillsborough Stadium, and with plenty of top-level interest, seeing Rohl lead the Owls next term is far from a certainty.
We asked Sky Sports pundit David Prutton for his thoughts on how he sees the saga panning out.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Prutton said: “I think the Danny Rohl, Sheffield Wednesday departure debate is akin now to bear-in-the-woods territory.
“I would say yes, he is going, and he’ll have suitors at Championship level and Premier League level from what I can gather.
“And understandably so. As we said, extenuating circumstances with regards to leading Sheffield Wednesday on and off the pitch, but he's done it admirably. They flirted a little bit with the top six. Ended up not troubling it.
“I'm intrigued to know what the next incarnation of Sheffield Wednesday is, but I've got a feeling it'll possibly be without Danny Rohl, and he’ll be sorely missed.”
Having come in and turned the fortunes of Wednesday, arriving with the club fearing relegation last season and having them challenging closer to the play-offs during this campaign, the 36-year-old’s stock is high.
According to Sky Germany, he is currently being eyed by the likes of Crystal Palace, Fulham and recently relegated sides Leicester City and Southampton.
Given all those clubs have varying degrees of uncertainty in the dugout, and all would be viewed as a promotion, with the latter two almost certainly set to be fighting it out near the top of the table again, temptation for Rohl will be high.
He has not yet declared his next moves, but the mood music is only heading in one direction.
With the controversial ownership of Dejphon Chansiri not looking like ending any time soon – the Thai businessman reportedly rejecting an offer from an American consortium recently – and many of their best players reaching the twilight of their careers, Rohl has been a rare bright spark at the Yorkshire club.
His tenure now looks to be drawing to a close, and the Owls will be lucky to land a gem like him again, so many will question what comes next for the club if Rohl’s departure is confirmed.
It feels like the spark for the start of a new era, but that era feels unlikely to be built for success under Chansiri.
For most fans, the club will be trapped in statis until a new ownership structure is installed at the top of the club, from which everything else can flow down.
It will certainly be interesting to see where Wednesday go, but if Rohl goes, there could be a couple of difficult seasons ahead for the Owls with Chansiri still in place.
