Harvey Elliott on Liverpool, Wembley and That PSG Heartbreak

Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott sat down with The Anfield Wrap’s John Gibbons for a candid discussion at the AXA Training Centre, covering everything from the agony of their European exit to the excitement of another Wembley final. The young midfielder spoke openly about his emotions, his role in the squad, and how he and his teammates are gearing up for the challenges ahead.

Liverpool’s Champions League Exit: “It’s Heartbreaking”

Reflecting on Liverpool’s dramatic Champions League clash with PSG, Elliott admitted the disappointment still lingers. “You know, sometimes games can go your way and sometimes they can’t,” he said. “Last night, it was one of those games where it didn’t really go our way.”

Liverpool fought hard across two legs, taking the lead in Paris, but the return fixture at Anfield proved a step too far. Despite the effort, they were edged out in a penalty shootout. “It’s never nice to go out that way,” Elliott admitted. “We gave everything for 120 minutes… but sometimes, it’s just not meant to be.”

The young midfielder insisted there was no blame on individuals, especially those who missed penalties. “It’s football. Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn’t,” he reasoned. “Curtis is a confident guy, and I guarantee if it comes to that situation again, he’s going to score.”

Turning Disappointment into Motivation

With Liverpool’s League Cup final just around the corner, Elliott knows there’s little time to dwell on what might have been. “That’s the best thing about football,” he said. “Whether it’s good or bad, there’s always a game around the corner.”

For Elliott and his teammates, Wembley holds special memories. “We all know what we went through last season there, and we want to regain that feeling of winning,” he explained. “The atmosphere for 120 minutes was unbelievable. To get that bit of silverware at the end kind of covers up what’s happened this week.”

The Liverpool fans will play a crucial role in the final, just as they did in last year’s triumph. “I felt like it was just our fans making the noise throughout the whole game,” Elliott recalled. “It gives us an energy boost – that feeling that the crowd is behind us.”

Coming Off the Bench: “It’s a Different Tempo”

Despite not always being in the starting XI, Elliott has relished his impact role this season. “Normally, it takes you 10-15 minutes to get into a game, but when you’re coming on for the last 10 minutes, it’s really hard to get up to speed,” he admitted.

That said, Elliott views the bench as an opportunity. “The good thing is you can watch the game, analyse it, see what positions you could come into,” he explained. “It gives me that vision for when I come on – I know where I need to be and what I need to do.”

Against Southampton, Elliott was thrust into action unexpectedly. “I was just warming up and the fitness coach came pegging it over, saying ‘You’re coming on,’” he laughed. “Instantly, it’s like ‘Right, this is what I need to do, this is how I need to affect the game.’”

Eyes on Wembley: “It’s About Doing Your Job”

With a final on the horizon, Elliott remains focused. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, he’s ready. “Every player wants to start a game, especially these kinds of games because it’s a cup final,” he said. “But at the same time, we’re a team. Everyone’s played a part in getting here.”

Liverpool fans will be hoping Elliott has another big moment in him – and if he does, he won’t be short of motivation. “I’ve got all the pictures of the trophy,” he revealed. “They’re all around my house. Every day, I look at them – and it gives you that hunger to keep going.”

Liverpool’s young star is ready. Now, it’s time to deliver.
