The England centre-back’s current deal is due to expire next summer, with the club possessing the option to automatically extend it by a further year.

The respective United futures of many players currently appear uncertain following the arrival of Ruben Amorim as manager last month, with more sweeping changes to the squad likely to follow his appointment as the new boss seeks to make his mark in future transfer windows.

However, Maguire insists he feels positive about his own situation at Old Trafford after holding productive discussions with the club.

“I haven’t really thought about it. I’ve still got this year to go with an option in their hands,” Maguire told The Times. “But all the signs are positive at the moment and the chat that I’m having is really positive.”

Maguire has had an eventful five-and-a-half years at United since his £80million - then a world record for a defender - move from Leicester on a six-year deal in the summer of 2019, making a total of 219 appearances across all competitions but often attracting criticism from fans.

This season, the former Sheffield United and Hull centre-back has appeared 13 times, having missed almost two months of action between early October and December with a calf injury sustained in the goalless Premier League draw at Aston Villa.

Maguire has gone on to feature four times so far under Erik ten Hag’s successor Amorim, starting in the top-flight in the high-profile games against Arsenal and Manchester City as part of the Portuguese’s preferred back three in addition to making substitute appearance against both Everton and Nottingham Forest.

The 31-year-old also has 64 senior international caps for England to his name and was a key member of the squad during Gareth Southgate’s reign, though missed the Three Lions’ summer run to the final of the European Championship in Germany due to a lingering calf issue and also did not play in the Nations League under interim head coach Lee Carsley, who will be succeeded by Thomas Tuchel in January.
